Personalized Care for Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are often misunderstood as they vary in type, symptoms and severity. Common personality disorders include histrionic, narcissistic, paranoid, avoidant and schizoid personality disorder. Trying to navigate a personality disorder can be challenging, especially when your symptoms seem unmanageable.

Our specialized personality disorder treatment programs in California help you manage your symptoms, provide valuable resources, work on emotional regulation, and restore stability. At Clear Behavioral Health, we create highly individualized personality disorder treatment programs in California that can help you identify, manage, and learn real-life coping skills for your condition.

Personality Disorder Therapy at Clear Behavioral Health

Our treatments for personality disorders utilize a comprehensive approach, ensuring that we focus on healing your body and mind.

We offer a full continuum of care to treat personality disorders throughout the Los Angeles, CA area, including residential mental health treatment, outpatient programs (partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP), and a virtual IOP that can help you manage your personality disorder from anywhere in California.

Working with various therapeutic modalities in our programs helps treat the entire person, not just the personality disorder. Our programs are in-network with most insurance plans, so you can worry less about finances and focus on healing

Complimentary Initial Assessment

You’ll begin with a thorough assessment in which you provide information about your background. Your assessment will include questions regarding the symptoms you are experiencing, the difficulties your symptoms bring you, any medication history, mental health history, and substance use history and your upbringing.

This helps us to create an individualized plan to treat your personality disorder.

  • 2-4 weeks of treatment
  • 5 days per week
  • 6 hours per day

What to Expect with PHP and IOP for Personality Disorders

After assessing the severity of your personality disorder symptoms, you will enter the best program for your unique needs. It’s common to start at the PHP level of care, then transition to IOP after you make some progress and your symptoms improve.

When entering our PHP or IOP program to manage your personality disorder, you can expect a multimodal approach including individual talk therapy, medication management if recommended, case management, group therapy, and holistic methods. These programs include:

Individual Therapy

Individual therapy is a highly tailored type of therapy session since it’s completely about you. Working on any issues you may have had growing up, previous mental health struggles, physical health conditions, and how your current personality disorder symptoms hinder your life will all be discussed.

Our therapists are trained mental health professionals educated in effective therapy methods, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), somatic therapy, EMDR, and Gestalt therapy.

Medication Management

If your personality disorder symptoms require more than therapy alone, one of our psychiatrists may recommend medication. Medication can be a great tool to help manage personality disorders, coupled with therapeutic techniques.

Case Management

Once a week, you will have a case management session to help you develop tools and skills to manage your emotions and bring stability to your daily life. These are everyday skills that will help you as you progress in treatment as well as in the future.

Group Therapy

In our programs, you will attend daily group therapy sessions. Working through your problems in a group allows you to connect and find support from others also dealing with similar conditions, and heal together with your peers. These sessions include skills building, relationship building, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Holistic Groups

You’ll join our holistic therapy groups, which include meditation for mindfulness, stress, yoga, sound baths, and more. Holistic therapy has been proven as a successful treatment modality to bring us back into our bodies through breath-work and remind you to stay present.

    What are Personality Disorders?

Personalities are created from the way we think, feel, and behave in the world. This can be influenced by many things like childhood, environment, and belief systems and can change over time.

When you have a personality disorder, it is a mood disorder that typically affects your behavior, emotions, and overall personality traits. When managing a personality disorder, you might feel isolated or misunderstood. If left untreated, personality disorders can have detrimental effects to your life.

Symptoms and Signs of a Personality Disorder

Some common signs and symptoms of a personality disorder are as follows:

    • Ongoing irritability
    • Difficulty regulating emotions
    • Inflated or distorted self-image
    • Unrealistic expectations for yourself
    • Delusions
    • Chronic boredom
    • Lack of self-awareness
    • Mood swings

These symptoms can lead to significant distress in your daily life. You might struggle with maintaining relationships, or work, feel unable to be truly happy in your day-to-day, and have difficulty completing basic tasks or achieving your goals.

    Types of Personality Disorders

Personality disorders are categorized into clusters. These clusters, A, B, and C, cluster together personality disorders with similar symptoms. Here are the most common personality types:

    Cluster A:

    Unconventional Behavioral Disorders

    • Paranoid Personality Disorder
    • Schizoid Personality Disorder
    • Schizotypal Personality Disorder

    Cluster B:

    Unpredictable and Dramatic Behavior

    Cluster C:

    Fearful or Anxious Behavior

    • Avoidant Personality Disorder
    • Dependent Personality Disorder
    • Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD)

If you struggle with a personality disorder, you might experience symptoms of other mental health conditions, including depression and anxiety. Also, you could be more susceptible to developing a personality disorder if you suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

At times, intense emotions and severe symptoms can lead you to self-medicate with drugs or alcohol, which, in turn, can turn into substance abuse. At Clear Behavioral Health, we have a dual diagnosis program to help treat co-occurring conditions.

The multi-pronged approach; the counselors, individual therapy, nutrition, sympathetic/empathetic counselors of each group session shifted my brain paths. You are never finished there, even when you “graduate”, they hold alumni group sessions when you feel you need it. I have nothing but gratitude for their program.

Clear Behavioral Health is my second family that I never knew I had that supported me and continues to passionately support the sober community. The therapists, counselors and group facilitators have been amazing in helping me have a voice, loving myself again, and seeing the world in a new light. I am eternally grateful.

From the get go, the staff made me feel welcome and were all very friendly. My therapist and case manager were also very helpful and supportive throughout the whole process. I found that the somatic therapy was the most valuable for me, the therapist who ran those groups was great. My biggest takeaway from treatment was to take the time to pause, not be afraid to ask for help, and not worry about things in the moment. If you are looking for meaningful change and being part of a new and supportive community, then Clear Behavioral Health is the right fit.

Overall I loved the experience and did not want to leave. The staff was very helpful and motivated me to stay even when I felt like running away. I also built meaningful connections with my therapist and case manager who gave me a lot of useful advice and are still supporting me today. Since leaving, my family and sponsor have noticed a big difference, and I could not recommend a more supportive environment for addiction and mental health treatment, Clear saved my life.
