What is Cocaine and Cocaine Addiction?

Cocaine is a highly addictive central nervous system stimulant drug derived from coca leaves, known for producing intense but short-lived euphoria, increased energy, and heightened alertness. Cocaine can be used in several ways, including:

    • Snorting the powdered form of cocaine.
    • Injecting dissolved cocaine powder into the bloodstream.
    • Rubbing the cocaine powder on the gums.
    • Smoking is the crystalline form of cocaine, also known as crack cocaine.

Under the United States Controlled Substances Act (CSA), cocaine is categorized as a Schedule II drug, making it limited in medical uses but carries a high potential for drug abuse and addiction. The drug directly affects the brain’s reward system by flooding your dopamine receptors, creating a powerful association between use and feelings of euphoria, making it difficult to quit without outside support.

Signs and Symptoms of Cocaine Abuse

Cocaine addiction often presents with specific physical, emotional, and behavioral symptoms. These can vary depending on the frequency and intensity of use but may include:

    • Increased tolerance and needing higher doses of cocaine to achieve the same effect.
    • Intense cravings and unsuccessful attempts to quit using.
    • Loss of appetite, weight loss, insomnia, teeth grinding, and physical exhaustion.
    • Irritability, paranoia, or anxiety.
    • Risky behaviors, such as driving under the influence or unsafe sexual activity.
    • Negative consequences such as financial or legal problems due to cocaine use.
    • Neglecting responsibilities at work, school, or home.
    • Withdrawal symptoms, such as depression, fatigue, or drug cravings when not using cocaine.

    Different Types of Cocaine

Cocaine can be found in various forms, each with unique risks and methods of use:

    • Powder Cocaine: Typically snorted or dissolved for injection.
    • Crack Cocaine: A crystallized form of cocaine that is smoked, often leading to a faster and more intense high but with severe health risks.
    • Freebase Cocaine: A smokable form of cocaine that bypasses certain additives, creating a more pure form of the drug, leading to rapid and dangerous effects and a heightened risk of overdose.

The multi-pronged approach; the counselors, individual therapy, nutrition, sympathetic/empathetic counselors of each group session shifted my brain paths. You are never finished there, even when you “graduate”, they hold alumni group sessions when you feel you need it. I have nothing but gratitude for their program.

Clear Behavioral Health is my second family that I never knew I had that supported me and continues to passionately support the sober community. The therapists, counselors and group facilitators have been amazing in helping me have a voice, loving myself again, and seeing the world in a new light. I am eternally grateful.

From the get go, the staff made me feel welcome and were all very friendly. My therapist and case manager were also very helpful and supportive throughout the whole process. I found that the somatic therapy was the most valuable for me, the therapist who ran those groups was great. My biggest takeaway from treatment was to take the time to pause, not be afraid to ask for help, and not worry about things in the moment. If you are looking for meaningful change and being part of a new and supportive community, then Clear Behavioral Health is the right fit.

Overall I loved the experience and did not want to leave. The staff was very helpful and motivated me to stay even when I felt like running away. I also built meaningful connections with my therapist and case manager who gave me a lot of useful advice and are still supporting me today. Since leaving, my family and sponsor have noticed a big difference, and I could not recommend a more supportive environment for addiction and mental health treatment, Clear saved my life.
