What is Suboxone addiction?
Suboxone is a medication commonly prescribed to help individuals recover from opioid addiction. It contains two active ingredients: buprenorphine, which is a partial opioid agonist that helps reduce withdrawal symptoms and cravings, and naloxone, an opioid antagonist, which blocks the effects of other opioids if introduced to the body.
While Suboxone can be a highly effective part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plan for opioid use disorder (OUD), it has the potential to be misused, leading to dependence or addiction. Abuse occurs when Suboxone is used outside of its prescribed guidelines, such as taking higher doses or using it in ways not intended (e.g., injecting or crushing the medication). Over time, misuse can lead to psychological and physical dependence, and Suboxone addiction can develop, complicating the recovery process for individuals already struggling with opioid use disorder.
Suboxone treatment can help you with illicit and prescription opioid addiction; however, it does not completely solve opioid dependence. Because it is a partial agonist, your brain is still receiving increased activity in your opioid receptors. This might keep you from craving other opioid drugs and safeguard you from opioid overdose, but you are not completely overcoming your opiate addiction.

Signs and symptoms of Suboxone addiction
Suboxone abuse shares many common signs and symptoms with other forms of drug abuse and substance use disorders. Recognizing these signs can help identify when someone needs support in managing their addiction. Common signs of Suboxone abuse include:
- Increased Tolerance: Needing more Suboxone to achieve the desired effects or to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
- Cravings: Feeling a compulsive urge to take Suboxone, even when it is no longer necessary for opioid recovery.
- Difficulty Stopping: Struggling to reduce or stop Suboxone use, even when it is causing harm.
- Secretive Behavior: Hiding the extent of Suboxone use or lying about how much is being taken.
- Withdrawal Symptoms: Experiencing physical discomfort like anxiety, sweating, irritability, or nausea when trying to stop or reduce Suboxone use.
- Continued Use Despite Negative Consequences: Continuing to use Suboxone even when it negatively impacts relationships, work, or other key areas of life.
If you or someone you love is experiencing these signs, it may be time to seek professional help to address Suboxone abuse and its effects.
Different types of Suboxone
Suboxone is available in different formulations, typically as sublingual films, or tablets. These are designed to be dissolved under the tongue for optimal absorption. The different strengths and types of Suboxone include:
- Suboxone Tablets: The most common form, available in various strengths (e.g., 2 mg buprenorphine / 0.5 mg naloxone, 8 mg buprenorphine / 2 mg naloxone).
- Suboxone Film: A thinner, dissolvable film that works similarly to tablets. This can be more discreet and easier to use for some individuals.
- Zubsolv and Bunavail: Alternative medications with similar formulations to Suboxone, containing buprenorphine and naloxone, but in slightly different forms and strengths.
These medications are intended to help reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms in people recovering from opioid addiction, but misuse can still occur if they are used outside of prescribed guidelines.

Is Suboxone addictive?
Suboxone, a combination of buprenorphine and naloxone, is considered an opioid, is highly addictive, and has a high potential for abuse and dependence. Although it is considered less addictive than other opioids such as Oxycodone, heroin, or fentanyl.
The main ingredient, buprenorphine, is a partial opioid agonist, which activates the same receptors as opioids but with much less intensity than regular opioids, reducing withdrawal symptoms and the intensity of the high.
Considering Suboxone is an opioid, you can develop an addiction, and in turn experience withdrawal symptoms if stopped suddenly.
Suboxone should only be used as prescribed by a medical professional, as well as discontinuing use.
