What is Heroin Detox?
Most people begin addiction treatment by first undergoing supervised medical detox. Heroin detox is characterized by a period of withdrawal, which can be physically and psychologically uncomfortable without the proper medical support. Symptoms associated with heroin withdrawal include:
- Cramping
- Sweating
- Muscle aches
- Vomiting
Withdrawal symptoms may appear within just a few hours after your last use.
Many people quickly become addicted to heroin, which is why detoxing from this drug can be especially challenging. Although everyone’s experience may differ, the heroin detox timeline usually lasts about a week.
Heroin withdrawal symptoms usually reach peak severity within the first few days and then begin to taper off over a week or so.

How Does Detoxing From Heroin Affect the Brain?
Heroin causes profound effects on your neural functioning and interacts with your brain’s opioid receptors. This interaction alters pain perception while delivering an immediate rush and intense feelings of pleasure. The brain eventually adapts to regular heroin use, which ultimately leads to tolerance and physiological dependence.
Heroin takes over your brain’s risk and reward system. It dramatically decreases the amount of serotonin, dopamine, and other neurotransmitters because they are being artificially released through heroin use.
Once you begin the detox process, your brain starts to rebuild neural pathways that may have been affected by prolonged use. This neuroplasticity allows your brain to grow, modify, and reorganize itself after addiction.
The Psychological Effects of Heroin Detox
As your body detoxes, you may experience increased anxiety, depressed mood, insomnia, and irritability. If you have used heroin for a substantial period, you may feel “numb” once you stop using. Because heroin significantly affects brain chemistry, it alters the production of various naturally occurring chemicals that deliver pleasure, joy, and feelings of relaxation.
Without the proper support, you may become tempted to use heroin again to alleviate these psychological effects of withdrawal. However, as your body and brain detox, the tolerance you may have once built up quickly reduces, leaving you at a greater risk of overdose if you use it again after remaining abstinent for some time.

What medications are used for heroin detox?
The medications we use to maximize the safety and comfort of the detox process vary based on the severity of your opioid withdrawal symptoms. Medications such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone are opioid agonists that interfere with the rewarding effects of heroin. These medications can help manage heroin withdrawal symptoms, including pain, nausea, vomiting, and cravings.
At Clear, medications are only used under the supervision of a licensed medical professional and when necessary. Our strong belief is that medications are just one part of a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan, used in combination with our treatment programs. All medication decisions are made in collaboration with your needs, and medication selection is dependent on your unique medical history, current health status, health goals, and other factors.
