Frequently Asked Questions
What is the purpose of the partial hospitalization program?
A Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides intensive mental health or addiction treatment for people who need more support than weekly therapy but don’t require 24/7 hospitalization treatment.
PHP offers comprehensive daily treatment, typically 5-6 hours per day, 5 days per week, while allowing you to sleep at home and maintain structure to your life.
It’s designed to stabilize symptoms, build coping skills, and provide structured support during a mental health crisis or significant challenge. Many people use PHP as a step-down from inpatient care or a step-up when outpatient therapy isn’t enough.
What’s the difference between a PHP and an IOP?
The main difference is the intensity and time commitment.
Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) provides more intensive treatment—typically 5-6 hours per day, 5 days per week. It’s designed for individuals who need comprehensive daily support to stabilize acute symptoms but don’t require 24/7 hospitalization.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) offers structured treatment at a lower intensity—typically 3 hours per day, 3-4 days per week. It allows for greater flexibility to maintain work, school, or other daily responsibilities while still receiving meaningful therapeutic support.
PHP is often recommended when you need more immediate stabilization or are stepping down from inpatient care. IOP works well when you’re ready for more independence, stepping down from PHP, or need more support than weekly therapy provides.
Our clinical team can help assess which level of care is right for you based on your current symptoms, daily functioning, and treatment goals.
How does PHP work?
PHP provides structured, intensive treatment during the day while you live at home.
Schedule: You attend 5-6 hours per day, 5 days per week, either in-person at one of our Los Angeles facilities or virtually.
Treatment: Each day includes individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, medication management (when needed), and holistic therapies tailored to your specific needs.
Structure: Our clinical team creates a personalized treatment plan at intake and adjusts it based on your progress. You work with therapists throughout the week to address symptoms, build coping skills, and practice strategies in real time.
Go Home Nightly: Unlike inpatient care, you return home each evening to apply what you’re learning while staying connected to family and your daily life.
How long does a PHP last?
The length of PHP varies based on your individual needs and progress, but most people participate for 2-4 weeks on average.
Some individuals may need only 1-2 weeks if they’re stabilizing quickly, while others benefit from 4-6 weeks or longer for more complex situations.
Your treatment team regularly assesses your progress and works with you to determine the appropriate duration. The goal is to provide enough intensive support to stabilize symptoms and build strong coping skills before transitioning to a lower level of care, like IOP or outpatient therapy.
Insurance coverage and clinical necessity also play a role in determining your specific treatment timeline.
Is PHP covered by insurance?
Yes, PHP is typically covered by most major insurance plans, including PPO and HMO plans.
Coverage varies depending on your specific insurance provider and plan, but PHP is generally considered medically necessary when you need intensive treatment beyond outpatient therapy. Most insurance companies cover a significant portion of PHP treatment costs.
