Types of Bipolar Disorder
Our clinicians have years of experience, training, and expertise in helping people navigating bipolar. Empathically effective bipolar disorder treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis. Bipolar Diagnoses include:
- Bipolar I Disorder: With Bipolar I Disorder, you experience mood shifts that transition between mania and depressive episodes. Manic episodes typically last a week and depressive episodes up to 2 weeks. Your mood may stabilize. However, recurrent episodes of mania and depression precipitate shortly after. The intensity of the manic and depressive episodes usually requires psychiatric hospitalization.
- Bipolar II Disorder: In Bipolar II Disorder, you may experience a pattern of depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes (less severe than full-blown mania). Hypomania involves a distinct period of elevated or irritable mood and increased activity or energy that lasts at least 4 days. Unlike Bipolar I, the manic episodes in Bipolar II are not severe enough to cause significant impairment in social or occupational functioning, nor do they require hospitalization.
- Cyclothymic Disorder: Cyclothymic Disorder is a lower form of Bipolar symptoms. Key indicators are that the mood fluctuation between hypomania and depression is less severe in intensity and duration. While less severe than Bipolar I or II, cyclothymic disorder still significantly impacts daily functioning and can progress into more severe forms of bipolar disorder.
With Bipolar Disorder, you may experience other mental health challenges such as anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). We will capture your unique mental health needs and build a program that serves you best.
If Bipolar disorder is contributing to substance use issues, Clear can assist you as well. Our dual-diagnosis outpatient and residential programs are clinically designed to provide treatment and management of underlying bipolar symptoms that may lead to substance use behavior.
