Treating Bipolar Disorder

Living with bipolar disorder can be frightening and exhausting.  Left untreated, the intensity of mood swings can escalate into hazardous behavior with detrimental consequences. Our team at Clear Behavioral Health has created an effective program structure for bipolar disorder treatments customized to treat symptoms and alleviate the stigma and shame for people with bipolar disorder.

Bipolar Disorder Treatment at Clear Behavioral Health

At Clear, we have created custom treatment programs to help you manage your bipolar disorder with our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), and residential treatment program. We are proud to offer these treatment programs conveniently in-network and partnering with most insurance providers.

We provide outpatient treatment for bipolar in Los Angeles, and Redondo Beach, residential treatment in Manhattan Beach and Torrance, and an online option for both PHP and IOP to all of California.

Both adults and teens with bipolar disorder benefit from our programs. We work with you to determine which program best suits your individual symptoms and needs.

Assessment of Your Bipolar Symptoms

Upon initiation into our programs, our clinical staff will provide a thorough assessment and collaborate with you to determine the best level of care to treat your bipolar disorder and manage your symptoms.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

We have developed the full continuum of care for bipolar treatment with our PHP and IOP programs. Both programs provide the clinically efficient treatment, which includes medication management, individual therapy, group therapy sessions, and holistic therapies.

These programs are perfect for helping you understand bipolar disorder and its symptoms, as well as connect with others who are also experiencing bipolar mood swings.

PHP

Includes:

  • 2-4 weeks of treatment
  • 5 days per week
  • 6 hours per day

IOP

  • 3 hours per day

This option works with your schedule, Monday through Friday

What to Expect with PHP and IOP for Bipolar Disorder

When you begin at the PHP level, you can transition into our IOP program for your remaining treatment. Everyone who completes either program then graduates and integrates into our alumni network. Our amazing alumni community is built on support and comradery, people who are steadfast on building connections and encouragement after treatment at Clear.

Each of these programs provide you with therapy and case management in an individual and group setting, for a bipolar treatment schedule that provides hope and healing at every step of treatment. These programs include:

Individual Therapy

Meeting with your bipolar disorder therapist once a week will help you understand your bipolar disorder at the core level, supporting you in mood management. Our therapists use evidence-based methods such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy, somatic therapy, and gestalt therapy.

Medication Management

Should your symptoms require medication, our clinicians will assist in finding the best bipolar disorder medication. Medications such as mood stabilizers will help balance your mood swings and cultivate a sense of normalcy and calmness in your daily life.

Once a week you will meet with your personal case manager. Learning valuable life skills, acquiring coping skills, and identifying your triggers will help you reintegrate back into your day to day life.

    What is Bipolar Disorder?

Not everyone experiences bipolar disorder the same way. There are three types, and each of them includes a depressive and manic/hypomanic episode. The nature of the mood episode can make you feel impulsive, engage in erratic behavior, poor anger management, self-harm, increased energy, experience intense sadness, feel suicidal, and changes in sleep and appetite.

We will help you determine the type of bipolar you are experiencing, to develop the perfect personalized treatment plan. If you are experiencing Bipolar Disorder symptoms, finding a solution can feel daunting. Clear is here to support you in finding a helpful solution.

    Types of Bipolar Disorder

Our clinicians have years of experience, training, and expertise in helping people navigating bipolar. Empathically effective bipolar disorder treatment starts with an accurate diagnosis. Bipolar Diagnoses include:

    • Bipolar I Disorder: With Bipolar I Disorder, you experience mood shifts that transition between mania and depressive episodes. Manic episodes typically last a week and depressive episodes up to 2 weeks. Your mood may stabilize. However, recurrent episodes of mania and depression precipitate shortly after. The intensity of the manic and depressive episodes usually requires psychiatric hospitalization.
    • Bipolar II Disorder: In Bipolar II Disorder, you may experience a pattern of depressive episodes alternating with hypomanic episodes (less severe than full-blown mania). Hypomania involves a distinct period of elevated or irritable mood and increased activity or energy that lasts at least 4 days. Unlike Bipolar I, the manic episodes in Bipolar II are not severe enough to cause significant impairment in social or occupational functioning, nor do they require hospitalization.
    • Cyclothymic Disorder: Cyclothymic Disorder is a lower form of Bipolar symptoms. Key indicators are that the mood fluctuation between hypomania and depression is less severe in intensity and duration.  While less severe than Bipolar I or II, cyclothymic disorder still significantly impacts daily functioning and can progress into more severe forms of bipolar disorder.

With Bipolar Disorder, you may experience other mental health challenges such as anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). We will capture your unique mental health needs and build a program that serves you best.

If Bipolar disorder is contributing to substance use issues, Clear can assist you as well. Our dual-diagnosis outpatient and residential programs are clinically designed to provide treatment and management of underlying bipolar symptoms that may lead to substance use behavior.

The multi-pronged approach; the counselors, individual therapy, nutrition, sympathetic/empathetic counselors of each group session shifted my brain paths. You are never finished there, even when you “graduate”, they hold alumni group sessions when you feel you need it. I have nothing but gratitude for their program.

Clear Behavioral Health is my second family that I never knew I had that supported me and continues to passionately support the sober community. The therapists, counselors and group facilitators have been amazing in helping me have a voice, loving myself again, and seeing the world in a new light. I am eternally grateful.

From the get go, the staff made me feel welcome and were all very friendly. My therapist and case manager were also very helpful and supportive throughout the whole process. I found that the somatic therapy was the most valuable for me, the therapist who ran those groups was great. My biggest takeaway from treatment was to take the time to pause, not be afraid to ask for help, and not worry about things in the moment. If you are looking for meaningful change and being part of a new and supportive community, then Clear Behavioral Health is the right fit.

Overall I loved the experience and did not want to leave. The staff was very helpful and motivated me to stay even when I felt like running away. I also built meaningful connections with my therapist and case manager who gave me a lot of useful advice and are still supporting me today. Since leaving, my family and sponsor have noticed a big difference, and I could not recommend a more supportive environment for addiction and mental health treatment, Clear saved my life.
