    What is Heroin Detox?

Most people begin addiction treatment by first undergoing supervised medical detox. Heroin detox is characterized by a period of withdrawal, which can be physically and psychologically uncomfortable without the proper medical support. Symptoms associated with heroin withdrawal include:

    • Cramping
    • Sweating
    • Muscle aches
    • Vomiting

Withdrawal symptoms may appear within just a few hours after your last use.

Many people quickly become addicted to heroin, which is why detoxing from this drug can be especially challenging. Although everyone’s experience may differ, the heroin detox timeline usually lasts about a week.

Heroin withdrawal symptoms usually reach peak severity within the first few days and then begin to taper off over a week or so.

How does Detoxing from Heroin affect the Brain?

Heroin causes profound effects on your neural functioning and interacts with your brain’s opioid receptors. This interaction alters pain perception while delivering an immediate rush and intense feelings of pleasure. The brain eventually adapts to regular heroin use, which ultimately leads to tolerance and physiological dependence.

Heroin takes over your brain’s risk and reward system. It dramatically decreases the amount of serotonin, dopamine and other neurotransmitters because they are being artificially released through heroin use.

Once you begin the detox process, your brain starts to rebuild neural pathways that may have been affected by prolonged use. This neuroplasticity allows your brain to grow, modify and reorganize itself after addiction.

The Psychological Effects of Heroin Detox

As your body detoxes, you may experience increased anxiety, depressed mood, insomnia and irritability. If you have used heroin for a substantial period, you may feel “numb” once you stop using. Because heroin significantly affects brain chemistry, it alters the production of various naturally occurring chemicals that deliver pleasure, joy and feelings of relaxation.

Without the proper support, you may become tempted to use heroin again to alleviate these psychological effects of withdrawal. However, as your body and brain detox, the tolerance you may have once built up quickly reduces, leaving you at a greater risk of overdose if you use it again after remaining abstinent for some time.

The medications we use to maximize the safety and comfort of the detox process vary based on the severity of your opioid withdrawal symptoms. Medications such as methadone, buprenorphine and naltrexone are opioid agonists which interfere with the rewarding effects of heroin. These medications can help manage heroin withdrawal symptoms including pain, nausea, vomiting and cravings.

At Clear, medications are only used under the supervision of a licensed medical professional and when necessary. Our strong belief is that medications are just one part of a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan, used in combination with our treatment programs. All medication decisions are made in collaboration with your needs, and medication selection is dependent on your unique medical history, current health status, health goals and other factors.

The multi-pronged approach; the counselors, individual therapy, nutrition, sympathetic/empathetic counselors of each group session shifted my brain paths. You are never finished there, even when you “graduate”, they hold alumni group sessions when you feel you need it. I have nothing but gratitude for their program.

Clear Behavioral Health is my second family that I never knew I had that supported me and continues to passionately support the sober community. The therapists, counselors and group facilitators have been amazing in helping me have a voice, loving myself again, and seeing the world in a new light. I am eternally grateful.

From the get go, the staff made me feel welcome and were all very friendly. My therapist and case manager were also very helpful and supportive throughout the whole process. I found that the somatic therapy was the most valuable for me, the therapist who ran those groups was great. My biggest takeaway from treatment was to take the time to pause, not be afraid to ask for help, and not worry about things in the moment. If you are looking for meaningful change and being part of a new and supportive community, then Clear Behavioral Health is the right fit.

Overall I loved the experience and did not want to leave. The staff was very helpful and motivated me to stay even when I felt like running away. I also built meaningful connections with my therapist and case manager who gave me a lot of useful advice and are still supporting me today. Since leaving, my family and sponsor have noticed a big difference, and I could not recommend a more supportive environment for addiction and mental health treatment, Clear saved my life.
