Types of Depression Teens Struggle With
Identifying the type of clinical depression you are experiencing can make managing the symptoms easier and your long-term relief more successful. Here are some of the common types of depression in teens:
-
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) – Also known as clinical depression, major depression, or MDD, is characterized by feelings of persistent sadness and feelings of hopelessness for an extended period. With MDD, you might experience weight changes, appetite changes, and a disrupted sleep schedule, and you may have suicidal ideation or thoughts of dying. This tends to be the most common depression type.
-
Persistent Depressive Disorder (PDD) – With PDD, you experience similar symptoms to MDD, with the exception that these symptoms will persist for more than two years.
-
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) — You experience depressive symptoms based on triggers such as transitions from day to night, seasonal changes, and weather changes. This most commonly occurs during winter or colder months.
You might also experience depression with other mental disorders, such as anxiety, PTSD, or bipolar disorder as well as substance abuse, commonly referred to as a dual diagnosis.
