Finding the right treatment program for substance use disorders can be overwhelming. It’s important to understand the different levels of care and recovery options available. Inpatient and outpatient rehab both provide unique benefits for addressing addiction and co-occurring disorders. Chances are, you need a balance of comprehensive care and flexibility, making outpatient addiction treatment an excellent choice for recovery.
What is Outpatient Substance Abuse Treatment?
Within addiction rehab, there are two main types of programs: inpatient and outpatient treatment. It is recommended to attend outpatient rehab programs after completing inpatient treatment to continue receiving therapy and support in early recovery. This helps you reinforce the foundation you started building in sobriety.

What is the Difference Between Residential and Outpatient Rehab?
Residential programs, including inpatient detoxification as well as drug and alcohol rehab, provide housing for anywhere from 30-90 days, depending on your specific needs [1]. Outpatient rehab is similar to inpatient addiction treatment, however, the main difference is that you continue to live at home during treatment. Additionally, inpatient rehab provides more support through constant medical supervision, but you will receive similar therapeutic interventions in both levels of care.
What Happens at Outpatient Rehab?
At the beginning of outpatient treatment programs, you will go to the outpatient rehab facility for a partial hospitalization program (PHP) Monday through Friday for six hours per day, returning home in the evenings. Then, you will step down to an intensive outpatient program (IOP) every other weekday for three hours per day, returning home in the evenings.
At Clear Behavioral Health, you will have access to a wide range of therapies, treatment methods, and resources, including:
- Individual therapy
- Group therapy
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
- Relapse prevention groups
- Process groups
- Mindfulness practices
- Holistic healing
- Family therapy
- Psychiatric services
- Community resources
- Support groups
These methods work together to provide a well-rounded approach to addiction recovery while also placing importance on understanding and healing underlying mental health conditions.
What is PHP and IOP?
In outpatient addiction treatment, PHP (partial hospitalization program) and IOP (intensive outpatient program) are two different levels of care [2]. PHP is more intensive because it involves 5 days of treatment per week for 6 hours a day. IOP is designed as a step-down from PHP or an alternative to inpatient treatment if your addiction issues are less severe. IOP meets 3 days per week for 3 hours a day.

How Much Does Outpatient Rehab Cost?
Like most addiction treatment services, outpatient rehabilitation can be covered by insurance. Without going through insurance, outpatient drug treatment can be pretty expensive. Thankfully, Clear Behavioral Health is in-network with most insurance providers, and your treatment could be completely or mostly covered.

What are the Benefits of Outpatient Rehab?
As you navigate this journey in addiction treatment, consider these benefits that can make outpatient rehab an important choice for your recovery:
- Affordability: Insurance plans often cover more outpatient program costs compared to residential treatment.
- Flexibility: You can maintain your job, education, or family responsibilities while receiving treatment.
- Short-term intensive treatment: The focused care helps you build new routines, develop recovery skills, and stay committed to your treatment goals while maintaining connections to your support system.
- Community building: Local outpatient treatment helps you build and maintain connections with a sober community in your area, providing crucial ongoing support for long-term recovery.
- Family involvement: These programs offer convenient opportunities for your loved ones to participate in family therapy sessions, helping your entire family system heal and develop healthy communication patterns that support recovery.
These represent just a few of the many benefits outpatient rehab offers. If you have a supportive home environment, outpatient addiction treatment provides an ideal balance of structured support and real-world integration to facilitate lasting recovery.
What is the Most Effective Treatment for Addiction?
If you’re struggling with addiction, reaching out for help is the first step that could lead to a new life in sobriety. In our experience, going through drug and alcohol detox, then inpatient treatment, followed by outpatient care, is the most effective way to treat addiction [3].
Having continued support throughout the recovery process will be influential to your success. This full continuum of care not only offers consistent therapy, but it also presents an opportunity to build a sober community. The bonds you build in treatment can carry you through the next steps of your recovery journey as you navigate life in sobriety.
